Fire departments across the country have started reflective address sign programs. These programs are wonderful, not only do they allow responders to find an address quicker but also act as a fundraiser for the fire department. Not to mention the pizza delivery boy will be grateful.
The program allows community members to purchase a double-sided reflective address sign for only $20 (the average price departments are charging). That’s cheaper than a pizza! The average cost for the department is around $6 a sign. The resident buys it, the fire department makes it up with a kit provided by them from the sign manufacturer. This is when the program becomes advantageous.
Once the department makes the sign up, instead of calling the home/business owner to pick it up, deliver it. Go out and meet the homeowner. Walk around the front and recommend a good place for the owner to put the sign. Remember to think of the sign in other times of the year, for instance in the winter a snow berm could block the view of the sign. This is also a great time to write up a pre-attack plan on the structure. Find out if there is anything on the property such as hazards the firefighters should know.
Make all your firefighters a salesperson for the signs. Talk at community service district meetings, homeowner associations, chamber events, and advertise the sign program on the fire department website. Even better, drive around and find homes and businesses that really need it. Knock on the door and explain the program and how beneficial a reflective sign could be for the fire department and ambulance agency responding to the property.
Of course, you may run into some critics who say, “Well, if you respond to my house for a fire, wont you see the blaze from miles away?” Answer them yes, but the sign is real handy for when it is your significant other having a heart attack, in the middle of the night and we can’t find your house because you don’t have it properly marked!
